When he finally hung up, Sinow stayed outside, trying to wrap his head around everything. His assistant was arranging travel, and he had given her Paige’s cell phone to get details from her and Cody. Ren was a different story. All of them had passports, all being dual citizens had kept their passports current. Ren didn’t exist in this world. He had no identity, no passport, no human name. Sinow had been forced to give him a name and an age that fit his appearance. Now they had to figure out how to make him a passport. Violissa was making things challenging by not shifting there, but perhaps she was right. It would be difficult to explain shifting into a crowd or in front of someone.

He ran his hands over his face. What were the Fates up to? He still wasn’t clear why Ren was here, why they had let Tynan strand them, what the point of all of it was. They needed to get back, they needed to right things. What point was there to keeping them here? The only saving grace was that every day they remained in this world was another day Tynan couldn’t touch Violissa. His mind wandered back to what Ren had told them, the Darkness threatened to rise in response, but he kept it at bay. He wouldn’t let Tynan take her this time, no matter how many times they told him it needed to happen. It didn’t matter to him if it changed their future, didn’t matter if it meant whatever revelation came from it wouldn’t happen. He would keep her safe. The words from her future self came back to him. He had kept her close in that life, and it had still happened, then he had tied her to him, never leaving her side. What had it done to them both? What had it done to Ren?

He looked back at the house. He could see Violissa through the windows. She was laughing, bringing food to the table with Erin while Keary talked with Garrett. Her golden hair slipped forward, and she nudged it back with her shoulder before finally tucking it behind her ear after she’d emptied her hands of the plates she’d carried. It had come lose when she’d been working with the map. He smiled as her stubborn curl slipped back to her cheek before she turned her back to him. Sighing, he spread his fingers through his hair, putting thoughts of Tynan aside. It wouldn’t do to dwell on it; he had enough to worry about. Walking back across the porch, he stood in the doorway unnoticed. If Violissa sensed his presence, she didn’t let on.

“So, all this time you’ve been trapped in our world?” Erin asked Violissa as both laid plates out. Sinow knew Erin was an entertainer. He was certain she’d set the dining room prior to the visit, but with the events turning as they had, she had decided the kitchen table was the best place.
